Because it's buggy and, contrary to the man page, clears the screen immediately. Auto sizing with dimensions "0 0" doesn't really work either. Use dialog(1).

Seems they didn't... 0.52.14 is the last version, about 1 yr old, and it clears the screen.

Another thing that dialog does properly: --verison works... So, ask your package manager, whatever it is:

rpm -qa '*newt*'
dpkg -l '*newt*'
...

whiptail may be in a separate package but since it comes with newt the version will be the same.
