OpenSSL originated as a fork of the SSLeay library in 1998. Eric Andrew Young and Tim Hudson, who were the original developers of SSLeay, started OpenSSL after SSLeay's development officially ended. They were later joined by other key figures like Mark Cox, Ralf Engelschall, Stephen Henson, Ben Laurie, and Paul Sutton.
