mplayer -vo help, tak ti to vypíše seznam dostupných video ovladačů, stejně tak pro audio mplayer -ao help.
Zkus některé z nich. A taky se podívej, co máš v proměnné $DISPLAY (echo $DISPLAY). Mělo by tam být něco jako :0

export DISPLAY=":0" a pak zkusit nějaký video. Asi ti to bude ještě řvát, že nejde zvuk, ale video už by mohlo jet.
