At the GUADEC 2012 conference held these days, a report "A bright future for GNOME" was presented, the authors of which tried not only to voice the current problems of GNOME development, but also to offer several ideas to increase the demand for the platform. The proposals voiced in the report boil down to strengthening the focus on mobile systems, continuing the line of development of GNOME 3 and preparing a self-contained operating system GNOME OS. According to speakers, the focus on traditional desktops is hindering GNOME's transformation into a mainstream platform. Currently, there is a boom in mobile systems and, judging by the conducted marketing research, the adult part of the US population is increasingly inclined to use portable devices - there is an increase in sales of smartphones, tablets and laptops, while interest in desktop PCs is steadily declining from year to year ... At the same time, the market of mobile systems has not yet reached saturation, it is dominated by the iOS and Android platforms, but there is a category of users who are not satisfied with everything in these platforms. The next major leap is proposed in March 2014 with the release of GNOME 4.0, which can be seen as a platform for building your own GNOME OS distribution. With a year and a half remaining until GNOME 4.0 is released, it is planned to mature and polish the user shell and all core GNOME applications. GNOME 4.0 will have full touchscreen support, making it possible to use GNOME OS on tablet PCs. In addition to the direct user environment, it is proposed to prepare such components as an installer and an update installation system. Also, a build environment will be formed for creating ready-made distributions suitable for use on the final hardware. For application developers, GNOME 4 will include a dedicated SDK that allows you to create both native classic programs and applications based on the use of web technologies for GNOME OS. To distribute applications created using the SDK, software delivery tools for users, including an application store catalog, will be prepared. A prototype for creating such a system can be an already working directory of add-ons for GNOME Shell. The emergence of GNOME OS will also solve the problems of low corporate engagement and resource constraints. To attract funding and additional developers, it will be possible to use business models based on the delivery of GNOME OS as a system pre-installed on devices from partner manufacturers. Ultimately, an ambitious 20x20 plan is mentioned to achieve 20% market share in 2020. The plan replaces the 2005 10x10 project, which was expected to have 10% of workstations using GNOME by the end of 2010.
