    How to make CBD oil
CBD oil bottles now occupy a prominent place on nightstands, desks and bathroom shelves as one of the most commonly used natural solutions for anxiety, stress, sleep and pain relief.

Most people try multiple brands in their search for the right product, noting that some brands exhibit certain effects and may even have different flavors.

So, it begs the question, where does this difference come from?

The difference between high quality CBD oil and low quality oil lies primarily in the extraction method used to separate the CBD from the rest of the cannabis plant material. But how exactly is this accomplished? Are certain methods better than others?

Let's take a closer look at how CBD oil is made. But first, let's take a look at why you might want to try using CBD oil. You can also check out our overall list of the best CBD oils, the best CBD themes, and the best CBD fudge.

    Benefits of CBD Oil

Before we dive into the methods used to extract CBD, reviews over at Careddi, let's briefly cover some CBD basics.CBD, or cannabidiol, is a phytocannabinoid compound found in the cannabis plant. Cannabis contains more than 100 cannabinoid molecules that are currently being studied, but along with CBD show unique beneficial properties.

CBD, which was initially studied for the improvements it caused in patients with epilepsy, is now being looked at for things like multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, conditions and more. In contrast to the infamous THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) psychoactive cannabinoid, CBD does not interfere with psychological functioning, making it increasingly popular among individuals seeking a natural alternative for daytime use.

CBD works by binding to the body's own endocannabinoid system (ECS) as well as CB1 and CB2 receptors in the body's peripheral and immune systems.CBD's ability to affect and regulate on such a broad scale is the reason behind the effects it causes throughout the body.

For example, both CBD and THC can bind to CB1 receptors in the ECS. When CBD binds indirectly to CB1, it changes the shape of the receptor and can reduce THC binding activity, thereby reducing psychiatric symptoms. This is why CBD is often used in combination with THC to reduce the feeling of "getting high". When CBD binds to the CB2 receptor on immune cells, it alters cell function and induces anti-inflammatory properties.

The ability of CBD to bind to the TRPV1 receptor and serotonin receptor 5HT1A also shows promise for anxiolytic and anti-inflammatory effects. While researchers are still working through complex and uneven regulations to gain a clearer understanding of the full potential of CBD, the results to date have made CBD oil one of the most popular botanicals.

    Cannabis and Hemp

When you buy CBD oil, it's likely you're buying a product made with industrial hemp. Thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, American farmers are allowed to grow and sell hemp products with a THC content of up to 0.3%. This makes hemp a federally legal product in all states, while leaving the legality of hemp (all hemp plants containing more than 0.3% THC) to individual states.

Aside from the legal issues of producing CBD products from hemp rather than cannabis, most companies choose to use hemp to extract CBD simply because you get a higher yield. Because of the higher concentration of CBD from the hemp plant, it only makes sense for companies to choose a more efficient method by using hemp.

    How to Make CBD Oil

Now that you have a good understanding of the health benefits of CBD, let's move on to discussing how CBD oil is made. Companies and DIY CBD oil enthusiasts extract CBD in three main ways. solvent and CO2 extraction are usually the methods companies choose, while carrier oil CBD extraction is a method often favored by consumers. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages, which we will describe in more detail below.

    Solvent Extraction
There are two main types of solvent extraction - ethanol and hydrocarbons. Ethanol and alcohol are the common solvents used in CBD extraction. For solvent extraction, the cannabis is picked, dried and soaked in isopropyl alcohol. Since CBD is a lipophilic compound, meaning it likes oil, it "sticks" to the oily substance and can be separated when mixed with alcohol.

Once all of the cannabis plant material is removed, the mixture is slowly heated at a low temperature to evaporate the alcohol. The extract must then be heated to decarboxylate and activate the cannabinoids, such as CBD. otherwise, the cannabinoids will remain in their inactive natural form and will have no effect when consumed.

Hydrocarbon extraction involves the use of propane or butane to extract the CBD compound. There is some controversy about the safety of using butane and propane as extraction solvents, as they can cause harm if used improperly. Butane extraction can give higher yields than CO2 extraction, which is one of the benefits of this method. In addition, hydrocarbon extraction can preserve the aroma and flavor of the plant compared to ethanol extraction, which can damage them.

Ethanol extraction also has the potential to leave behind chlorophyll extracts, which can alter the flavor profile and color of the final oil. Both solvent methods, while capable of producing high yields, do have the potential to leave trace elements behind. Therefore, products made from solvent extracts are more affordable, but riskier.

    Carbon Dioxide Extraction
Carbon dioxide extraction is the gold standard in the cannabis industry and is used by brands that want to create the highest quality premium products. Supercritical CO2 extraction is the most common form because of the flexibility it offers. We are most familiar with CO2 in its gaseous form, however, under certain pressure and temperature conditions, CO2 can become a liquid, and at the "supercritical" point, both a liquid and a gas.

Supercritical CO2 extraction can separate terpenes and cannabinoids from the rest of the unwanted plant material, resulting in very high purity. As with solvent extraction methods, you will need to decarboxylate the CBD first to activate it, which will happen prior to implementing supercritical CO2.

Companies interested in extracting specific cannabinoids or making a 99% pure CBD isolate will certainly implement CO2 extraction.

The cost of the equipment and the technical capacity required to run the machine are major hurdles for many small businesses that may want to use CO2 extraction. However, because the risk of contamination is so low and the end result so effective, CO2 extraction methods for CBD oil production will only take hold as the industry expands.

    Carrier Oil Extraction

The carrier oil method is by far the simplest and easiest way to extract CBD. If you are interested, you can find numerous recipes online that will walk you through the steps needed to make your own version. As mentioned earlier in the article, since CBD is an oil-loving compound, it naturally attaches to oily substances and can be easily absorbed in this way.

MCT oils, such as coconut oil and olive oil, are popular carrier oils used for extraction. After the cannabis plant is decarboxylated, it is mixed with a carrier oil and heated in a double boiler to infuse the cannabinoids into the oil.

Although potency and plant residual contamination are higher than other methods, carrier oil extraction will yield a natural and safe CBD oil. If you're curious about making your own full-spectrum CBD oil at home, the carrier oil extraction method will be a great option to experiment with once you've chosen cannabis and carrier oil.
