Filip Vrlík: And now, may I ask you something about your life and you personally?
Miguel de Icaza: Yeah, yeah.
OK. So, your job sounds very interesting, but it has to be very hard. Do you travel a lot because of work?
I'm travelling less now because I got married last year, so...
Congratulations.
Thank you. So, I'm trying to travel less, but I still travel little bit. I just was in Germany, here in Pilsen, Prag now, Paris later today, and then I am going back home.
So most of the time you are at home?
Yes, I try to be. Especially when Mono launches are coming I have to be sure that they are ready to ship and I have to work out of home. So I try to be home, but it's not allways possible. But it's really fun to go round and meet people and see what are people doing with Linux and things like that.
OK. Are you still programing or hacking or do you just drive the company and people.
I program very little these days. The core of the Mono team today has 25 people and that means that I have to manage the team and say: "you do this, you do that, you guys do this before we do that..." And also I have to meet with people who are using Mono like financial industries, all the programing shops etc. My main goal is to grow Linux, so I spend lot of time with doing that, but I also have to manage to get enough money to have 25 people working full-time on Mono; or ensure the desktop team. So we pay hackers to work on Mono. It's a shame that I'm not hacking, but it's more important to make these things happen and then I have little time for hacking. It's still to write little cookie here and there, especially in Mono, but it's not my main goal right now.
You are traveling a lot. Which country or city is your favorite and where would you like to come back again? How do you like Prague?
Obviously Prague, because I didn't see much of it. I'd like to see few certain things here. One of the favorite ones that I like are: Barcelona, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, Paris, Istanbul. I would like to go back to a few places, because I didn't see enough of it, like Beirut. I have never been in and would like to: Cairo, Beijing and Tokyo. So there are still lots of things to do.
Life's short, so play hard.
Exactly.
What are your hobbies? How do you spend your free time?
Hmm, I don't know. I think my hobbies change over time. I've been having lot of fun reading books recently. But right now history of Libanon and the Palestina problem I think I understand the issue very well right now. I also started playing couple of instruments - piano, flute and guitar. But I'm terrible. It's one thing I do to spend the time.
On your personal web page are links to Palestina confict. Do you become involved in these questions? Or are you interested?
Yes. Well, I think those poor people have had... I don't know why I got to involve in that. I have listened to somebody and everything he said I could't believe. After I left the talk I still didn't trust things he said, I came home and started to search for information and it turned up that everything he said was true and situation was worse than I thought. I just never knew those horrible things that were happening. I think many other people just don't know what's happening, what the problem is; like I did. And they should be aware. I think the Palestinian problem can be tracked back to the creation of Israel in 1948 when they expelled, I don't know how many million Palestion from the land.
It's two problems: one - they expelled these people, kick them out during the war. These people fled because they didn't want to be in warzone. And when the war was over they didn't let them come back, because they said: you are not allowed to return if you went to another country. And the other country doesn't want to have refugees, it's like, imagine tomorrow you have all of Austria here working and you say: moment, this is my country. Lots of problems, I would say most in Middle East can be traced back to the fact that Jordan, Syria and Libanon have this huge Palestinian population that is living on their soil. These people live in refugee camps, they cannot work, cannot get jobs. At least in Libanon you have milion people, it's like a jail. They are living in these areas they cannot work outside of these areas, they cannot buy houses outside. What they do is they build one house and then they build another floor and another floor... it is really bad, you can see how the house is crooked, because the next floor is bigger than the old. It's very fragile and very dangerous. These countries don't want to have extra milion people working and Israel won't let them come back, that is the source of problem. It's horrible human disgrace. But what you gonna do?
And final question. Philosophical question. Do you realise nothingness of human beings while looking at the stars in summer night?
I don't look at stars very often.
You should.
I should. I should:) We are on this planet by accident and natural selection has created this conscious mind, so let's take advantage of this unique opportunity. Or it's gonna be gone before we realise it. It's just a matter of extracting as much as possible while are we here.
Thank you very much for your time. I wish you nice travel. Have a nice day. Goodbye.
